The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar

Press Release

The Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar welcomes the European Union decision on 22 April 2013, regarding the lifting of all economic sanctions on Myanmar.

The EU has enthusiastically supported the wide-ranging reform efforts of the Government of Myanmar, and as an initial gesture of its support for that reform, the EU, on 14 May 2012, suspended most of the sanctions it had previously imposed upon Myanmar for a period of one year.

The Government believes that this decision will be greatly beneficial to the Myanmar people who have demonstrated their strong determination to achieve democratic reforms and have been actively supporting the Government’s reform process during the last two years.

The lifting of all economic sanctions on Myanmar will encourage and engender a far stronger Myanmar-EU relationship and will facilitate a deeper and wider bilateral cooperation.
